Enriching the current conceptualisations of water security with Earth system resilience, Earth system governance and comprehensive security, the project’s scientific objective is to provide a novel understanding of and to develop and validate solutions to sustainable water security and its governance.

GloWater makes use of a mixed-method approach and a variety of data sources, ranging from quantitative analysis utilising global hydroclimatic and trade data in identifying water security hotspots with linkages to Finland to comparative case studies of recently promoted collaborative governance solutions such as water diplomacy and corporate water stewardship.

The societal objective of the project is to create concrete means and conditions for public, private and civil society actors to work towards shared sustainable water security aims.

The project is funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC) established within the Research Council of Finland.
