Current Tasks

I work as the group manager of the Ecosystems functions group and function as a leading research scientist in research projects. The group focuses on research on impacts of climate change and other stressors on marine and freshwater biological communities and ecosystem. The group also apply research on marine and freshwater biogeochemical cycles to develop new restoration activities and develop nature-based, blue economy promoting solutions and innovations for the improvement of the state of marine and freshwater environments. My personal interest is in microbial ecology and the biodegradation of hazardous substances in the marine environment, and the application of molecular biological techniques for the function of microbes. I also function as an expert in the Nordic Council of Ministers working group on oceans and coasts.

Background

I hold a MSc (1983) and PhD (1987) degrees in biology from the Århus University, Denmark. I also am an adjunct professor (title of docent) in the field of microbial ecology at University of Helsinki. My research concentrates on microbial activity, diversity and importance in biogeochemical cycles in polluted marine environments. I have studied microbial communities and their role in biodegradation and bioremediation of polluted soil, water, and sediment.

Current Research Topics

  • Bacterial communities in cold marine environments in the Baltic Sea and Arctic
  • Biodegradation of oil compounds in the marine environment
  • Environmental impacts of oil spill response actions

Research Projects

Past projects:

  • Integrated oil spill response actions and environmental impacts Grace (grace-oil-project.eu), EU Horizon, 2015-2019, coordinator.

Other activities

  • Member of the Nordic Council of ministers working group on oceans and coasts (NHK)
  • Deputy member of the Maritime rescue advisory board.
