Cyanobacterial observations have increased in both lakes and sea areas; the situation is typical for the late summer

Larger amounts of cyanobacteria have been observed in inland waters than in the previous week. The observations are concentrated in eutrophic lakes and bays in the southern parts of Finland. Cyanobacterial blooms have become more abundant along the coast and in the Archipelago Sea. In the open sea, significant cyanobacterial rafts have only been observed in the Bothnian Sea and in the western parts of the Gulf of Finland.

New project creates tools for monitoring the Arctic and adapting to the changing environment

The European Union will provide 15 million euros from the Horizon 2020 Programme to fund the Arctic PASSION project for the period 2021 to 2025. A consortium of 35 partners will promote the integration of international environmental observing systems for the Arctic and improve the tailoring of these systems to the needs of various user groups ranging from local inhabitants to academia through to industry and decision-makers.
