Guidance to implement the “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) principle required by the EU funding facility for measures under the Finnish recovery and resilience plan
2022-04-27
The funding of projects under the Finnish recovery and resilience plan is only possible if the projects comply with the “Do No Significant Harm” principle. The project shall not for example weaken the mitigation of climate change, transition to a circular economy or protection of biodiversity. Green filamentous algae are fouling fishing nets along the coast of the Gulf of Finland
2022-04-26
The Finnish Environment Institute has in March-April received reports of algae fouling fishing nets under ice on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. Fouling has been exceptionally intense this spring in the Sipoo archipelago. The fouling has been caused mainly by filamentous green algae. Fouling of fishing nets has also been observed in Helsinki and Hamina. The growth of green algae has been favoured by the long ice cover season together with the sunny weather. Green algae thrive in cool water.

Wood-based products can store carbon and replace fossil-based materials
2022-04-22
The potential of wood-based products to store carbon dioxide and replace fossil-based raw materials has been studied in a recently published research report. Forests and forest products can contribute to climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon into forests or wood-based products and by avoiding fossil-based greenhouse gas emissions in substitution for alternative materials.
