Developing a spatially explicit modelling and evaluation framework for integrated carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation: Application in southern Finland

An intention to integrate the high biodiversity value forests and climate change mitigation resulted a pilot in central Finland. According to the results, there are sites that promote them both simultaneously. However, especially in the case of the carbon, many forest areas that are important in the means of climate change mitigation were less important in conserving biodiversity. The big difference between these two is that biodiversity is highly dependent on certain high value areas, whereas carbon storages and sequestration occur in various environments. By taking into consideration the synergy of these two, can land use planning be developed towards more sustainable use of natural resources help us to save resources.

Examples from landscape prioritization for biodiversity and carbon in the Kokemäenjoki river basin. All maps show the currently protected areas (in dark grey) and the best 10% of forests on mineral soils, where harvesting should be avoided (in colour). Panel A) gives the integrated balanced priority areas (in orange) that maximize both biodiversity values and carbon pools and fluxes. Panels C) and D) show priority areas for biodiversity only (in blue) and carbon only (in red), respectively. Boxplots in panel B) show how much these priority areas capture of the total values within mineral soil forests, shown separately for biodiversity (dead wood potential, old forests, threatened species and focal birds) and carbon (pool and fluxes) features (x-axis), and for currently protected areas and the three different priority solutions (A,C,D) (boxplots). © SYKE, University of Helsinki, LUOMUS, University of Eastern Finland, The Finnish Forest Centre
