UAV-ARCTIC in brief

The goal of this project is to define suitable knowledge related to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and to integrate innovative sensor solutions to UAV’s to develop novel tools for environmental monitoring. The target area for this development work is the Arctic and Baltic Sea environmental conditions. The project is focusing especially on suitable tools to monitor oil and chemical spills in cold environment. Tests and field trial will be conducted during the project with workshops among UAV/RPAS* specialists and governmental agencies. An English written summary report will be produced in Spring 2017 including  test results from oil and chemical sensor tests conducted.

Major Events

First major event of UAV-Arctic project was conducted in March 2016 in the Port of Kalajoki, see the map of the area. A two days long test was performed in day and night conditions to study the possibility to detect oil among ice and slush in winter conditions. Both RPAS and helicopters were used to detect oil from pools locating in the port area. Each pool contained seawater, oil, ice block and snow in a predefined manner. An Expert workshop with scientists, pilots and RAPS specialist took place in the test site in 13 – 15 March 2016.

The second major event of UAV-ARCTIC took place in the middle part of Finland – in KUOPIO in 1.-2. November 2016:

  • Tests to detect RPAS to detect airborne chemicals and HNS agents was made with a special task force in the training area of the Emergency Services College.
  • Workshop Programme

A two days long international seminar was arranged in the premises of the College. The seminar included three special sessions. After the seminar, demos was arranged in the training area.
