About the Book of abstracts:

  • The content in the book is in chronological order.
  • The first 23 pages include the table of content listing abstracts in chronological order.
  • Starting from the pdf page 24, the abstracts are presented in chronological order by sessions.
  • At the end of the book, a list of authors is presented. By clicking on the page number next to the author, the reader can access the corresponding abstract in the book.
  • The Book of Abstracts is also visible in the BSSC2023 Mobile app.

Venue

Baltic Sea Science Congress 2023 is held on 21-25 August in Scandic Marina Congress Center, a modern congress venue right in the heart of Helsinki. It has a fantastic location by the sea in Katajanokka, just a few minutes' walk from the Market Square and a short walk from the Helsinki Central railway station and the main attractions of Helsinki. 

About

The purpose of the Congress is to bring together scientists working on issues related to the Baltic Sea Region to present the most recent research and to discuss status, trends and the future of the Baltic Sea as well as future research needs. The specific focus is on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Baltic Sea Science Congress 2023 is a part of the Finnish National Implementation Plan for the UN Decade of Ocean Science. The Congress is also a part of Finnish Presidency program (2023–2024) of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS).

The target audience of the Congress is scientists working within the field of natural science in relation to the Baltic Sea Region. We also invite the sharing of research from other coastal seas that is of general relevance to the topic of the Congress.

Welcome

Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) and Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) warmly welcome you to the 14th Baltic Sea Science Congress, 2023. The Congress will take place at the coast of the Baltic Sea in the beautiful city center of Helsinki. The Venue is the Marina Congress Center.

During the Congress, the state-of-the-art in our scientific understanding of the Baltic Sea will be presented and implications for ecosystem discussed. The core of the event will be the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the topic of which will form the Session structure in the BSSC2023.

Main topic of the Congress

BSSC2023 is organized in accordance with the guidelines of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in such a way that

  • it highlights the role of research in promoting the use and protection of the seas in accordance with sustainable development,
  • strengthens the dialogue between researchers and society, and
  • acts as a contribution to the Baltic Sea region in the global process.

Notice

Baltic Sea Science Congress strive for a participation of scientists and students irrespective of their nationality. However, national and institutional restrictions in EU countries, which are in effect as a response to the aggression by the present Russian government in Ukraine, require that scientists and students affiliated at Russian and Belarusian state institutes are currently excluded from participation in the BSSC2023.

Important dates

  • February 2023: Registration and submission of abstracts opens
  • 26 May 2023: Extended deadline for submission of abstracts
  • May 2023: Review of abstracts, division to oral and poster presentations
  • 11 August 2023: Last date for registration 
  • June 2023: Final Programme ready
